Gynecology FAQs
General Questions
What’s the difference between Gynecology and Obstetrics?
Gynecology focuses on women’s health when they are not pregnant. Obstetrics focuses on
pregnancy and pregnancy-related problems.
Why do I need to see a Gynecologist?
Most often, patients see a gynecologist for their annual wellness exams.
What should I expect at my annual wellness exam?
The most basic part of the annual exam (also known as a “well woman exam”) is a review of your current and past medical, surgical, and family history. Your doctor uses this information to determine what preventative tests you may need to keep you healthy. Most patients also need a breast and pelvic exam. In many cases, you may need a pap test (sometimes called a pap smear). Your doctor will collect the pap test during your pelvic exam. Some patients require other types of testing, like lab work, mammograms, and bone density scans. Our office has a lab and can draw your blood during your visit.
Besides wellness exams, what other things do Gynecologists take care of?
The most common things we see and do in the office include:
- Abnormal menstrual cycles, including heavy, painful, and/or irregular cycles.
- Contraception counseling, prescriptions, administration, removal, and surgical planning
and performance of permanent sterilization. - Infertility or difficulty conceiving
- Cancer screening and treatment of some precancers
- Screening and treatment of sexually transmitted infections
- Evaluation and management of vaginal discharge
- Evaluation of pelvic pain
At what age should a person start seeing a Gynecologist?
Many patients visit the gynecologist for the first time when they are in their teens for irregular and/or painful menses. Teenagers can have a variety of other issues that can also be addressed in our office. Most of the time these issues do not require an exam. If an exam is needed, your doctor will walk you through each step to try to minimize discomfort. If you are unsure what the next best step might be, please call us so we can find the right type of appointment for you.
What types of treatments does a Gynecologist offer?
Both prescription medication and surgery. Many issues may be treated with short courses of hormones, anti-inflammatories, or antibiotics. Some issues may require surgical treatment. Your doctor will discuss your options with you during your visit and the two of you will decide on your
treatment plan.
What if I need surgery?
Sometimes surgery is the best way to treat an issue. You and your doctor will have a conversation about the type of surgery we recommend for you. Our Surgery Coordinators will work with you and the hospital or surgery center to find the best time and place for your surgery. Our business office staff will speak with your insurance company to help you understand your financial responsibilities before surgery.
How much does surgery cost?
Surgical cost varies depending on your insurance and the type of surgery you need. In most cases, a deposit is required to schedule your surgery. Some insurance companies require preauthorization, further lab testing, and preoperative procedures before surgery can be scheduled. Our Surgical Coordinators will walk you through this process so you understand each step.
